How We Operate |
Engine Company One is the oldest fire fighting company in the town of Southington. We are located in the Fire Headquarters building at
310 North Main Street in Southington. The company is comprised of approximately twenty members. When duty calls in our district, we usually
respond with Engine 12 in support of Headquarters Company. Company One also assists companies Two, Three, and Five as needed.
While our primary coverage with Engine 12 is mainly the center of Southington, we also respond with Ladder 1 and Rescue 1 to extend coverage throughout town. Of course our primary purpose is to handle emergency situations, but we also do various other activities to benefit members of the community. Assisting headquarters members with fire prevention training in our schools and the well-known "fill the boot" fundraising drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on weekends in August are just two such activities.
Being a member of Company One is not all work. We do have our fun and games from time to time. We sell our world famous hamburgers and hotdogs (don’t forget the free firehouse meat sauce) at the Apple Harvest Festival in the fall; at Old-Timer’s night we get a chance to meet with past members to hear war stories and get some valuable, hard-learned advice; there’s a Christmas party for the children of company members complete with a visit from Santa; and Couples Night, an evening of appreciation for our significant others, who keep our dinners warm and usually wake with us when the alarm goes off in the middle of the night; during the spring and summer, we attend Musters, where we perform fire ground skills in a fun, competitive atmosphere; from Memorial Day through to the fall, we take part in community parades as well as parades in other towns.
Even though we have our share of fun, there isn’t a member among us who wouldn’t stop in the middle of these or their individual activities to do what we do best… to serve the Town of Southington as Volunteer Fire Fighters! |
